I am not much of a technology person and that's why never estimated the impact antivirus software could have on my life. My unhappy experience started the day my son, Mac, announced he was moving to another country along with his family! His company had recently posted him there and he was supposed to join them in a few days' time. The thought of not being able to see my family for 5 years depressed instantly! Stella, Mac's wife, pestered me to come along. She said it would be fun to explore a new place and interesting to understand their culture. But my health, my social circle, and the comfort of staying in my own home held me back from travelling with them. Before the news could properly sink in, I was driving Mac, Stella, and Tia, my 2 year old granddaughter to the airport.
For the next few days, I was completely glued to my computer. The only thing I looked forward to in the entire day was the video chats I had with my family. These chat sessions enabled me to watch Tia as she mumbled her first words! I also saw Stella as she converted her new apartment into a cozy looking home! I would have missed every bit of these developments had it not been for the Internet and my computer that constantly made me feel as if I was physically present with my family.
Everything went fine until one day when my computer stopped working! I can't tell you how terrible I felt. I had noticed, in the last few days that the computer was slow and when I attempted to open my mails, I would automatically be directed to some other websites. But, that day it was different. The computer would just not start. I panicked and called my neighbor who recommended a tech support company. I instantly dialed their toll free number. The calming voice of a friendly technical expert on the other side of the line calmed my nerves. From him I learnt that the issue with my PC was a possible case of virus attack. He asked me about the antivirus software I had installed on my PC and when did I updated it last. It was only then that I realized that I had not updated Norton Antivirus for a long time! Moreover, I may have accidentally opened virus infected websites or attachments and in the process provided an easy access to malware and other malicious programs to my PC.
I felt guilt about the situation. And kept on fretting about it, but the friendly tech expert repeatedly assured me that everything was under control, now that I had called them. He remotely accessed my computer and installed updates for Norton Antivirus. He also scanned my PC and removed unnecessary files that would have slowed it. Within no time I was back in front of my computer chatting with my family. Besides a small fee that I paid, I also secretly blessed him for being my 'angel' in distress. I am glad that I called a online technical support company.
